Rosenbaum House

Rosenbaum House, Florence, MS
The Rosenbaum House is the only house in Alabama designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and is the only one open for touring in the southeast. It is designed in his Usonian style, which is low-cost housing for middle class families. Wright originially designed the Rosenbaum house smaller, but the family asked him to add an addition once they had 4 sons.
My studio 2 class toured the house in fall 2008 and I really learned a lot. I have always been interested Wright's work so I enjoy touring his houses whenever I can. The house is designed with his characteristic canteliever roofs and built in everything. The entire house is built with I think cherry wood, or some kind of red wood. Wright incorporates his strong horizontal lines everywhere in the building. The part of the house where the bedrooms are located starts with a very narrow hallway with the rooms to the right, kind of set up like a railway car.
The tour guide told us that they have been renovating the house to bring it back to good condition. The major problem the renovation has come across is that Wright's flat roofs are aesthetically pleasing, but leak badly when it rains.
